There is something wonderfully satisfying about turning a handful of simple ingredients into something you'll use again and again.

This homemade applesauce is easy to make, naturally sweet from the apples themselves, and filled with warm flavours from cinnamon and nutmeg. It's delicious on its own, served alongside breakfast, stirred into porridge, or used in baking.

One of the things I love most about applesauce is how versatile it is. It can even be used in certain baking recipes as an alternative to eggs, making it a handy ingredient to keep in the fridge.

Once you've made it yourself, you'll be surprised at how simple it is.

Ingredients

  • 2 kg organic apples (with or without the peel)

  • ½ cup filtered water

  • ½ tsp nutmeg

  • 2 tsp cinnamon

Method

  1. Wash and prepare the apples.

  2. Add the apples, water, nutmeg, and cinnamon to a large saucepan.

  3. Cover with a lid and simmer until the apples are completely soft, approximately 20 minutes.

  4. Once softened, blend using a food processor or hand blender until smooth.

  5. Pour the applesauce into a clean glass jar.

  6. Secure the lid and carefully turn the jar upside down while it cools.

This helps create a seal and allows the applesauce to keep well in the refrigerator.

Storage

Store in the refrigerator for approximately one week.

Nina's Tip

The flavour of your applesauce will depend on the variety of apples you use. Sweeter apples will create a naturally sweeter sauce, while tart apples add a little extra freshness and depth of flavour.

You can also leave the applesauce slightly chunky if you prefer a more rustic texture.
